The Mystery of Blackmere

lyrics

The Settlers arrived at a dark, ancient forest, not on any map, and yet without a name. Eventually the settlers came to call it Blackmere Forest, owing to the strangely dark trees that grew there. They found the forest to be a rich hunting ground, and they built a shelter of stone and timber. It was crude, but improved as more settlers arrived bringing with them more advanced skills.  The shelter would be a gathering place for many years to come. In this spirit they founded Blackmere Lodge. A creek winding through the forest came to be known as Blackmere Creek. Hunters would rest upon its banks, and the settlers would fish there in season.
Blackmere Forest provided ample hunting, but was also known to have more than its share of tragedy and unexplained happenings. Hunters went missing, and were never heard from again. The settlers formed search parties but with little success. Most that went missing were never found.
With oral tradition and stories passed down through more modern times this would become known as The Mystery of Blackmere.
According to local legend, and stories told around campfires at night, hunters entering Blackmere Forest in twilight hours sometimes encountered the light of a lantern, illuminating the face of an old woman while she crept in the shadows, as if stalking them. Some men claimed the sightings to be the darkness playing tricks on their eyes, or on too much drink. Nothing was ever proven.
In time, after many generations, the landscape of the woods became more bog-like due to heavy rains, lower oxygen in the soil and changes in climate. Most of the trees became waterlogged and died. A dense fog enveloped the land, and the sun could no longer provide its life giving touch. The forest turned bog was deserted by its inhabitants, and mainly forgotten.
Hunters would visit less frequently as the area became inhospitable and the lodge eventually sank into ruin. Over time the bog formed peat, a valuable source of fuel that would attract local cutters intent on harvesting the bounty. In harvesting this bounty, they also extracted the unexpected. The bodies of men from an older time.
